Welcome 2 Detroit gets its overdue reissue from BBE, and it’s every bit as swaggering and rugged as any of his more celebrated classics. Dilla’s brilliant ear for a beat is all over this release, cherry-picking and manipulating everything from slow jams and early electronic music to boom bap and funk, ripe for spits from rappers like James Yancey and duo Frank n Dank. The 20th anniversary set comes loaded with instrumentals and a trove of unreleased cuts.
