No one can be sure of what has kept 20th century composer Gustav Holst’s early-century seven-movement orchestral suite The Planets in the public imagination of classical heads and electronic innovators alike over so many years. But it’s surely no coincidence that The London Philharmonic Orchestra’s 1978 performance lead by conductor Sir Adrian Boult, here immortalised on two discs, became the essential one. It’s easy to hear its influence across the booming tones of John Williams’ work on Star Wars, which came out just the year before.
