Stazma, AKA Frenchman Julien Guillot, reinvents himself on Shapeshifter. The visceral assault and fearless mashing of genres that defined his early breakcore releases are tempered and combined with more experimental and dubby elements. As usual with Stazma, the sculpting of the breaks and razor-sharp sounds is exquisite. Tracks like ‘Triton’ and ‘Solarium’ still have that frenetic drumming and irresistible energy, but the likes of ‘Glimpses’ and ‘ENd…’ show how good Stazma can be in a more introspective mood. There is plenty here for fans of his early work and also for those interested in the progression and development of this French rave hero.
