The first soundtrack release on Kode9’s eclectic and pioneering label Hyperdub is taken from Lawrence Lek’s debut feature film ‘AIDOL,’ which premiered at Sadie Coles HQ in 2019. Lek creates virtual worlds of music and cinema which explore the tense relationship between humanity and Artificial Intelligence. AIDOL’s sci-fi futurism is translated into an entirely synthetic, spellbinding soundtrack, which includes English and Mandarin vocals (created with a Vocaloid voice synthesiser), as well as instrumentals produced with composer Seth Scott. If you enjoyed Fatima Al Qudiri’s Asiatisch album on Hyperdub, AIDOL will be a fascinating listen.
