As reflective a producer as he is a forward-thinking one, Rafael Anton Irisarri has spent years honing his humble craft: fashioning enormous ambient structures from field recordings and all sorts of studio trickery unknowable to mere mortals. Peripeteia deals in no small part with the drama of the years preceding it, through illnesses, political upheavals and sudden reversals of fortune. Naturally, these compositions are great walls of abyssal sound, pulling and pushing at the limits of a form once erroneously dubbed ‘background music’.
