Drawn to the Egyptian capital after extensive research into ancient African kingdoms, Sun Ra leads his band into some of their most fearsome and formidable work, by turns frantically free-wheeling on the likes of ‘Cosmo-Darkness’ and ‘Solar Ship Voyage’, and full of muscular melody and rousing heights on ‘The Light Thereof’ and ‘Friendly Galaxy No. 2’.
