On Figures In Open Air we find sound artist and composer Sarah Davachi going deep into her unique musical style, one that sits on the border of drone, chamber composition and organ music whilst inhabiting a realm of its own completely.

The recordings which make up Figures In Open Air were taped at concerts that Davachi has given in various cities across the world - Chicago, Montreal and Berlin to name but three. Indeed, the Berlin and Chicago concerts are presented in full here, and as a result, the listener is invited to luxuriate in the lengthy drones that Davachi delivered on those days. The manner in which the organ parts slowly shift on these numbers is ruminative and hypnotic, their unbroken chords moving from harmony to discord and back again over almost an hour.

Figures In Open Air is described by Davachi as a ‘complement of sorts’ to her 2020 studio LP Cantus, Descant. As such, it’s no surprise that different versions of several tracks from that album can be heard here - an instrumental take on Cantus, Descant highlight ‘Canyon Walls’, for instance, spins out the etherised dream-pop of the original into almost fifteen minutes of eerie FM drones and pensive woodwind harmonies.

Sarah Davachi’s Figures In Open Air finds the composer, sound artist and organ player bringing together several live recordings for a generous, illuminating work.
