German producer Florian Kupfer provides the drifting, noise-inflected counterpoint to the left-field house and techno he’s been purveying since 2013. In stark contrast to his past, Observer is a stellar exercise in restraint, as each new track aims to convey a vast, moody landscape. Opener ‘Gates of Hell’ washes the listener in white noise before being broken by an ominous, jangling loop, while ‘Abandonment’ measures out a length of fuzzy tape hiss alongside a droning string section.
