Recorded after an extensive research period into ancient African kingdoms, Sun Ra and His Astro-Intergalactic Infinity Arkestra crystallised their Afro-futurist sound into some of its most edifying and out-there experimental shapes with Nidhamu. Flurries of extra-terrestrial genius are to be heard in the extra-musical organ cacophony of ‘Space Loneliness No. 2’, which eventually blossoms into a slow-swinging full band swagger of horns, and further outward again into the technicolour rises of ‘Discipline 15’ and the mangled solos of ‘Discipline 11’. The title track sees Sun Ra reach the zenith of his avant-garde fascinations, sounding like Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew played between radio station frequencies.
