Cerebral hip-hop abstractionist ManonMars returns with a second LP of swirling wordplay and melancholic intimacy. In addition to ManonMars’ own frank, deadpan delivery, In Colour is given a deeply psychedelic edge by the presence of producer O$VMV$M, who nimbly adapts smooth jazz and funk samples into miasmic soundscapes. A key example comes in the form of ‘4eva’, a chopped and screwed reverberation which trades hip-hop groove conventions for a low-slung, dark slow jam rhythm, as ManonMars’ verses guide the listener through relationship failures and the general anxieties of his day-to-day life.
