Formerly known as Micachu and The Shapes, Good Sad Happy Bad return renamed, complete with a rethinking of their approach on the steady, hypnagogic pop psychedelia of Shades. Shades of C86-type vibes pour abundantly from the LP, as well as the kind of sunny pop sensibilities we’d expect from a 1960s rock record. Bandleader Mica Levi takes a step back to allow room for Raisa Khan to helm the project into further hypnotic directions, as latest band addition CJ Calderwood showcases a wealth of multi-instrumental glory on the likes of ‘Do It’, a dreamy plod through flange-soaked guitars and snaking recorder phrases transformed into as competent an instrument as any synthesiser.
