Long before he became the pseudo-mythical post-punk minimalist we know and love, dancefloor legend Patrick Cowley’s disco sensibilities were fully intact — and Some Funkettes is testimony to the fact. Recorded between 1975 and 1977, Cowley’s synth innovation delivers wickedly funky Chic-esque stompers with the likes of ‘Do It Any Way You Wanna’ and ‘Dynamite’, as OG discotheque covers ‘I Feel Love’, ‘Papa Wuzza Rollinston’ and ‘Spiked Punch’ — unapologetically lifting from Herbie Hancock’s ‘Chameleon’ — reveal an inventive spirit interminably indebted to making bodies groove.
