Glasgow-based musician Joanne Robertson might bear the marks of a bedroom-producer singer-songwriter — sparse, introspective, largely acoustic — but Painting Stupid Girls suggests a vision beyond narrow confines. The air of mystery that haunts ‘wheels’, ‘high noon’ and ‘call say’ recall Robertson’s past work atop the the music of like-minded enigma Dean Blunt, paired with the dreamy quality you’re likely to hear in Jessica Pratt’s early recordings, right down to the preference for melody over lyrical meaning. At 7-and-a-half minutes, closing track ‘peacecraft’ only slightly reveals a deeper crevasse of deeply felt meaning beneath Robertson’s craft, but thankfully, the atmospheric mystery remains intact.
