Recorded live in Tokyo in July of 1975, Herbie Hancock was in the throes of his pure, distilled funk stages during Flood. As if to shed his modal jazz past, Hancock deigns to challenge his audience by opening his live show with the plaintive piano piece ‘Maiden Voyage’, before plunging into the post-bop ferociousness of ‘Actual Proof’. Things only get funkier from there with the whoops and whistles of ‘Watermelon Man’ and, of course, ‘Chameleon’, a contender for funkiest jam ever written.
