Having emerged almost fully-formed from LA’s Brainfeeder troupe to bridge the divide between instrumental hip-hop and high concept electronica, producer Shlohmo returns to Friends of Friends for more treatises on beatmaking and the human condition. Heaven Inc. EP speaks to the elusive nature of the physical world under capitalism’s glossy sheen, a world as full of empty promise as it is darkly comical pitfalls. Beeps and vinyl scrapes haunt the busy leads and hissing hi-hats of the title track, as melancholic melody lines and clattering beats paint mournful images into the fabric of ‘Looking at Plants’ and ‘Misanthrope’.
