Overstand is an album of lush jazz influenced pieces from the Apifera ensemble. The quartet, which contains Stones Throw’s Rejoicer (Yuval Havkin) on keys, fold a variety of influences into a beautifully verdant core sound across the course of this LP.

The manner in which rich jazz harmonies are blended with both contemporary and classic fusion influences across Overstand immediately makes one think of artists such as BADBADNOTGOOD and Kamaal Williams. This is especially prominent on the album’s more cerebral hip-hop-/neo-soul-influenced numbers - the deft squelch of ‘Lake VU’ and ‘Four Green Yellows’, for instance. On these tracks the strutting beats dovetail with an array of delightful synth sounds and some brilliantly melodic bass playing.

There is a sense of deftness to the performances on Overstand, one which Apifera manage to maintain at all tempos, from the hip-hop-influenced numbers up to the fast funk bpms of ‘Énék Hamaguro’ and ‘The Pit & The Beggar’. Indeed, the album’s graceful air even proliferates when drums and bass take a backseat - Overstand’s closer ‘Pulse 420’ is a weightless number reminiscent of Mort Garson, full of shimmering electronic textures and playful synthesiser runs.
