Containing as much genre-muddled sonic discomfort as ever, Malibu Liquor Store is yet another perplexing LP of shimmering and dislocating psychedelia from Craig Clouse, aka Shit & Shine. At this stage, it’s near-impossible to know what to expect from a new Shit & Shine release, but ‘hallucinogenic Wild West nightmare’ wouldn’t have been last on our list. The title track swaggers with a Morricone flavour interrupted by trills of digitally-manipulated drums, while ‘Hillbilly Moonshine’ rolls out a motorik march set alongside heavy bass and an overarching sense of gunslinging menace. With ‘Sherriff of Yates Hill’, you can add DJ Rashad to the ever-expanding pool of surprising Shit & Shine sample fodder.
