Baton Rouge, Louisiana rapper and Odd Future OG Vritra brings a valuable outsider’s perspective to sun-soaked LA hip hop with SONAR. A far cry from the concrete street-smarts of his peers, Vritra is an MC happier dwelling on the bucolic and the spiritual, unfurling milk and honey bars over ‘CLOSER TO GOD’ and ‘NEURONS’, as famed LA scene producer Leon Sylvers IV cuts and chops funk, soul and synth samples into some of his most abstract and psychedelic beats to date. While SONAR brings to mind Earl Sweatshirt’s melancholic style, this LP finds Vritra keying into a broader inter connectivity with the greater cosmos through hip hop.
