Belbury Poly, the recording project of Ghost Box Records co-founder Jim Jupp, delivers another brilliantly evocative collection of electronic compositions in the form of The Gone Away. This LP draws inspiration from British fairy folklore, though Jupp taps into a far earthier history than one might expect from that premise. Indeed, the mysticism of Jupp’s tradition means that The Gone Away is an ideological cousin of some of the releases in the excellent Folklore Tapes series.

Sonically, The Gone Away steers a little more towards kosmische synth stylings than some of the other Ghost Box Records releases. While there is still that strong sense of hypnagogic reverie that runs through so much of the label’s output, many of these tracks are characterised by gentle mid-tempo pulses and a cornucopia of playful synth sounds. In this respect, The Gone Away has just as much in common with those records which have taken on the Ghost Box style - Dalham’s Alderson Loop, Plone’s Puzzlewood - as the BBC Radiophonic Workshop artists who informed the label’s early releases. Mind you, an ominous collage like ‘Copse’ or library-influenced number such as ‘They Left On A Morning Like This’ will leave you in no doubt as to who it is you are dealing with here.
