South London spinners and perennial club dwellers We Buy Gold return with WBG004, their fourth disc of white-label UK rave mastery. The artistic invocation of pirate radio productions and tantalisingly untitled works carries through to the contents of the tracks themselves. ‘A1’ skitters with techno velocity, as the ominous audio sample, lifted from a disquieting news segment, precedes the electro-focused drive of ‘A2’. On the flip-side, ‘B1’ builds from the dimmed mood of bittersweet piano phrases to the dislocated darkness of a jungle beat (and back again), while ‘B2’ delivers some speedy juke alongside a chipmunk diva vocal.
