Gondwana Records releases Norwich jazz trio Mammal Hands’ fourth LP of hypnotic genre fusions. Captured Spirits sees the trio once again infusing their jazz sensibilities with electronica in the vein of Portico Quartet, imbuing their dreamy mix with textures lifted from contemporary classical as well as world music. The minimal piano phrase which underpins the snaking saxophone of ‘Ithaca’ and ‘Chaser’ places Mammal Hands firmly within the heritage of Philip Glass, while the wandering tablas of ‘Versus Shapes’ conveys a sound indebted to the likes of Ravi Shankar. But it’s hard to play down Mammal Hands’ wondrous sense for melody, as ‘Floating World’ and ‘Little One’ go to show.
