Originally released on cassette in 1985, This Heat member Gareth Williams (perhaps best known as ‘the funny one’) and his musical accomplice Mary Currie crafted Flaming Tunes as an odd-ball one-off after travelling through India. Entranced by the possibilities of freely-improvised music of non-Western cultures and typically bored with the confines of post-punk, the sole fruit of their efforts is a home-recorded testimony to limitless possibility, be they realised in the acid-pop amble of ‘Beguiling The Hours’, the freak-folk ode of ‘The Best Weapon’ or in lo-fi drum machine avant-waltzes like ‘Breast Stroke’.
