Chicago-based producer and drummer Makaya McCraven follows up the lauded 2018 release Universal Beings with an LP of music cut from the same sessions. Like any McCraven disc, Universal Beings E&F Sides is ostensibly a jazz LP at its heart; drums skitter on ‘Mak Attack’, horns slither on ‘The Hunt’. But distinct to McCraven’s approach is his clipped and snipped drumming style. The self-proclaimed beat scientist fashions movements like a hip-hop producer, spinning the fusion rhythm of ‘Half Steppin’’ into a hot jazz number at DnB’s pace, full of gnarly false stops and skipping CD repetition.
