Black Marble’s Chris Stewart brings some misty-eyed nostalgia to his cold wave synths with his covers record I Must Be Living Twice, and like any great covers record, Stewart’s hero worship is more surprising than it is foreseeable. The tinny drum machine pop of Robert Palmer’s ‘Johnny and Mary’ fits the bill perfectly, as do the loving, 808-indebted renditions of Lives of Angels’ ‘Golden Age’ and The Field Mice’s ‘Emma’s House’; but who would have thought Stewart could carve a late-career Wire track and a Grouper song into his own icy, synth-driven image?
