Model Home’s recent One Year LP for Disciples stood on the border of hip-hop and industrial music, its quixotic nature making it mysterious and primed for further exploration.

Further exploration is exactly what we get on this new cassette Model Home x Pure Rave. Working with the original One Year tracks, Pure Rave - a Detroit collective who are tight with experimental music legends Wolf Eyes - employ a variety of concrete techniques in order to fashion two side-length pieces.

Disciples are no strangers to collage - just see the His Name Is Alive record 6Teen OK which they issued in 2019 on this count. However, the label has never released something quite as adventurous or as boundary-pushing as this. Via use of (among other things) prepared turntables and manipulated copies of One Year, Pure Rave manage to fashion hallucinogenic glitch soundscapes from the bars of MC NappyNappa and productions of Patrick Cain. Occasionally the swamp of sounds coalesces into jerky, stuttering beings that almost pass for beats; at other points we come up against disorientating mazes of anti-rhythm. There are even moments of beauty to be found within - the middle of the cassette’s second half emerges into a clearing of ecstatic synthesisers. Whatever’s going on here, as a whole Model Home x Pure Rave makes for an enthralling listening experience which brings you ever-deeper under its spell.
