The godfather of trip hop returns with another LP to challenge everyone’s preconceptions. Tricky’s Fall To Pieces sees the legendary Bristolian producer cast his instantly recognisable downtempo beats alongside vocalist Marta Złakowska, who helps heighten the tension of Tricky’s blocky synth underpinnings on ‘Thinking Of’, likewise injecting a soulful melancholia to the driving drum rhythm of ‘Fall Please’. Elsewhere on Fall To Pieces, ‘I’m In The Doorway’ invokes Tricky’s cheerier moments, as Oh Land’s wispy tremolo unfurls across zippy horns and a deceptively simple piano phrase. Tricky’s own croaky gnarl comes off as more menacing than ever on the bluesy piano number ‘Hate This Pain’.
