Evan Parker’s 1978 LP Monoceros is a strange set of free-jazz studies. Built from nothing more than Parker and his clarinet, this LP finds the musician employing a variety of techniques - rapid-fire tongue movements, circular breathing - in order to produce a startling array of sounds. It is the sonic equivalent of an abstract artwork in which, after a few moments of staring, one begins to see millions of different images in the paint. Monoceros has been reissued courtesy of Treader Recordings, a mark of quality when it comes to this sort of thing.
