About nine years ago, a select number of people got their hands on an EP of dubbed-out and percussion-heavy minimal techno which came in a sleeve with nothing but a Spiegelmotiv logo on it. Now, with this reissue of the Drumira EP, it comes to light that those four tracks came from a collaboration between Stefan Schneider (Mapstation / To Rococo Rot), Sven Kacirek and one-time Africa 70 percussionist Nicholas Addo Nettey. This is a deep and potent set of productions - rather than making the tuned percussion the focus of Drumira, Nettey’s contributions in fact lurk at the edge of mixes, augmenting Mapstation’s strange and skulking beats. The overall effect is not dissimilar to the eery sound design of recent Ilian Tape releases via the meditative bass weight pressure of Deep Medi Musik and the intoxicating rituals of Skull Disco at their best - interlocked throughout with an inimitable percussion style from Nicolas Addo-Nettey. Very highly recommended.
