Though it remains in the same lane of expansive, Detroit-indebted dance music as many of the other drops on Subwax Excursions, Reedale Rise’s 2018 EP Forest Canopy is also one of the label’s more sonically adventurous releases. Reedale Rise demonstrates great versatility here, drawing from acid, breaks, electro and techno across Forest Canopy’s four tracks. It’s the incorporation of these influences that adds additional dynamism to productions which otherwise owe a great debt to the Belleville Three - ‘Tranquille’ powers itself with an insistent machine-gun bass sound that draws from both EBM and Legowelt while the churning breakbeats of closer ‘Araya’ up the emotional ante.
