January Songs has three main modes, all of which are distinct yet also bring out the power of the others. Firstly, you find the record backed by droning, hypnagogic ambiences; these are offset by a few clattering industrial techno jams in the L.I.E.S. vein; and then there are tracks like ‘In Endless Blue, Cyan, Navy’, which, with their noisy anti-rhythms and whooshing electronics, demonstrate a third way.
