Well, here’s quite the meeting of the minds. Conceived as a way for Detroit artists to collaborate in ways unseen before, The Beneficiaries sees Detroit techno legends Jeff Mills and Eddie Fowlkes, along with poet Jessica Care Moore, crafting a musical prism through which modern composition, techno and spoken word travel to form something totally new. Beats vary in mood and tone — furious on ‘A1’ and ‘C1’, approachable on ‘B1’ and ‘C2’ — while Moore’s oracular delivery pours itself across the mix, bringing to mind all the Afrofuturist poets of the past.
