Darkstar’s ‘Jam’, a piece of quiet-storm London electro-soul from their Civic Jams LP, was always only a few tweaks away from being turned into an ebullient club roller. On this new EP, a remix from the veteran production duo Horsepower Productions sees ‘Jam’ transformed into something just like that - in Horsepower’s hands the track’s stirring synths are spiced up with the verve of a two-step beat. However, the pair also pay deference to the hushed power of the original here, holding back from fully unshackling ‘Jam’ and thus pushing it into the same low-lit space as a veteran MJ Cole production. A dub removes the cooed vocals to foreground the shuffle of Horsepower’s drums, and the Jam (Horsepower Productions Remixes) EP rounds out with Darkstar’s original.
