Ruby Rushton’s latest release is an upbeat single which invigorates various strains of jazz and fusion with the effervescent playing that has become this group’s signature. Tenderlonious and his gang invoke the finest of Herbie Hancock and Weather Report on both ‘Sun Khosi’ and its B-side ‘Chrysalis’, hitting that sweet-spot between driving rhythm and harmonic contemplation. There is some spiritual influence to be heard in ‘Sun Khosi’s rolling rhythms while ‘Chrysalis’, with its playful stabs and funk-flavoured groove, pays homage to Hancock’s 1974 jam ‘Butterfly’. The prominence of flute will also please those who have so enjoyed Soul Jazz Records’ recent Lloyd McNeill reissue series.
