David Lynch made a film about a singing monkey called Jack Cruz, because of course he did. The Flame Of Love, Lynch’s latest release on Sacred Bones, fronts ‘True Love’s Flame’, the song Cruz sings in said movie (What Did Jack Do?). It’s a typically atypical Lynchian ether-ballad, at once cerebral and haunted yet also heartfelt, struggling for air. Cruz’s pinched, gooey vocals (and they are actually vocals, not screeches) only add to the ‘True Love’s Flame’s unreal air. ‘Dancin' in the World of Love’, the B-side and a tune which didn’t appear in What Did Jack Do?, mines a similar vein.
