Well, what a treat this is. Not just a new Neil Young album - a new golden-age Neil Young album, one that, in the words of the man himself, is “the unheard bridge between Harvest and Comes A Time”. He’s not wrong - the music here, a combination of Young's peerless folk balladry and the rockier sound that he leaned into more and more as the 1970s wore on, makes good on his promise. Homegrown has been discussed in hushed tones since it was first slated for release way back in 1975, and a handful of the songs have appeared in different versions on later Neil Young records, but this new edition finally presents the album’s dozen tracks as they were intended to be heard.
