Jan Jelinek’s Tierbeobachtungen (translation: ‘animal observations’) was originally released back in 2006, but this new edition represents the first time that the album has made it to vinyl. By this point in his career, Jelinek had moved away from the micro-house style with which he found fame through LPs like Loop-Finding-Jazz Records. This is a set of droning and diverse avant-garde soundscapes, one that pushes out beyond Krautrock and kosmische to get into another space entirely. Imagine a blend of the organic electronics of Four Tet’s contemporaneous records, the more psychedelic end of what Animal Collective were doing at the time and Oval at his most sonorous and you’re in the right ballpark for Tierbeobachtungen.
