Roly Porter’s Kistvaen is a dark and stormy LP. One has a sense, when listening to these seven tracks, of elemental forces being expressed through broiling electronics that one also gets from Ben Frost’s music. Indeed, an epic like ‘Passage’ may even go further than anything Frost has done, the track’s juddering and monolithic mid-section almost pushing through into full-on drone-metal territory. Even the record’s more considered passages - electronic vistas, vocal vignettes, orchestral sections that draw from video-game music - have a storminess to them. File Roly Porter’s Kistvaen next to similarly turbulent, boundary-pushing works by artists like Eartheater and Aïsha Devi.
