First built in the early 1970s, Electronic Music System’s EMS Synthi 100 is one of those rare instruments that adds a unique colour to any piece of music. The occasions when one catches the sound of it on record are always notable - artists as diverse as Meat Beat Manifesto, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Sarah Davachi have all put the Synthi 100 to work. Now Stephen and David Dewaele, a duo you’ll know best as Soulwax, have delivered an entire album based around the sounds of this singular machine.

The pair meet the EMS Synthi 100 halfway here. Certain tracks are instantly recognisable to fans of the band’s rocky brand of dance music - for instance, see how Deewee Sessions Vol. 1’s eight-minute-long closing-cut marches onward with chunky electro-house grooves and seasick synth tones, or the way that ‘Movement 3’ pairs up a similar beat with the sort of chatty arpeggios one tends to associate with Jean-Michel Jarre.

Conversely, there are also moments here when one senses that the brothers Dewaele have let the Synthi 100 take the lead. Those aforementioned arpeggiations appear again, free from drums, in movements one and four. These soundscapes maintain the melodiousness that is characteristic of the pair’s music, but they are also more patient than what the brothers may have come up with if they had their usual arsenal of synthesisers and drum machines to hand.

On the first volume of the Deewee Sessions series Soulwax’s Stephen and David Dewaele work solely with the legendary EMS Synthi 100 synthesiser. The result is a set of harmonically rich and texturally deft synthscapes that are as well-suited to home listening as they are to the dancefloor.
