Melbourne’s Pugilist continues to defy genre with the Blue Planet EP, his first collection from Martyn’s 3024 label. There’s a bit of fellow Australian scenester Roza Terenzi in the way that Pugilist’s grooves have an earthy, almost dubwise quality about them, but Blue Planet deals in bassier tones than the house and acid leanings of Terenzi (although ‘Acid Flange’ does come close). ‘Blue Planet’ toughens up an old-school two-step, Tamen collaboration ‘Guidance’ pairs almost-breakbeat grooves with widescreen pads, and ‘Quick Fix’ channels the spirit of Drexciya.
