Lord of the Isles
Whities 029
Catalogue Number
Release Date
May 1, 2020

Lord Of The Isles has long had a reputation for serving up one of the warmest sounds in modern club music. While their techno and electro beats are usually primed for dancefloor deployment, tracks made by the producer tend to come bathed in the sort of welcoming atmospheric washes that one tends to associate with ambient music.

On this new Whities EP, Lord Of The Isles leans even further into these beatific reveries. Take opener ‘One Lifetime Is Not Enough For Us’, a track whose reverb-drenched synths invoke water lapping against the shores of the Scottish islands from which this artist takes his moniker. On ‘Passing’, a similarly beat-free number, the feeling is heightened further still by Ellen Renton reading her poem of the same name. In its combination of dense atmospheric textures and spoken word, the track harks back to the collaborations between Anna Holmer and Rupert Clervaux on the latter’s After Masterpieces LP, released via Whities in 2019.

The other two tracks of Whities 029 find Lord Of The Isles reintroducing drums to his sound. Both ‘Waiting In Arisaig’ and closing cut ‘Inheritance’ blossom from evocative openings into the sort of rose-tinted breakbeat techno tunes that adorned Jacques Greene’s Dawn Chorus LP. The first section of ‘Inheritance’ also sees Renton again delivering quietly stirring words atop wistful synths - and as on ‘Passing’, Renton’s scene-setting here is vivid and vibrant.

With some help from Scottish poet Ellen Renton, Lord Of The Isles delivers stirring synth meditations and wistful club takes on new EP Whities 029.
