Ribbons

2019 marks a decade since Bibio released his first LP on Warp. As such, it seems fitting that Stephen Wilkinson will mark the occasion with new album Ribbons, his seventh for the label and the tenth of an impressive career. Where Wilkinson’s previous full-length Phantom Brickworks largely eschewed song-centric writing in favour of ambient soundscapes, Ribbons finds a way to balance the two sides of Bibio’s output. Lead single ‘Curls’ is a gorgeous psychedelic folk ballad, giving us a taste of what else is in store, the way in which the track’s dreamy production brings together trilling strings, busy guitar and vocal close harmony gives ‘Curls’ a great hypnagogic feel.

PHANTOM BRICKWORKS

Designed as a map to see you through mental portals into places and times - some real, some imaginary, Bibio's PHANTOM BRICKWORKS utilizes his skills at crafting improvised musical pieces to smuggle in more darker notions of what constitutes ambient music in 2017. Describing the album's context and ideas, Bibio is quoted as saying: “I don’t believe in ghosts but I do believe places can be haunted by meaning. Places change, not always for the better and not always by natural, benevolent or politically sound means. A place can be charged with atmosphere because of what it has been through or what it has been."

Warp reissue the debut album from Stephen Wilkinson, aka electronic musician Bibio. Originally released on Mush Records in 2004, the album introduced the world to Wilkinson’s pastoral electronics, found sounds, and guitar lines. The mixture of ambient electronics, atonal drones, and natural sounds proved infectious, though as often imitated as this style of music is, few pull it off as well as Bibio.

A Mineral Love

Bibio reaches album number seven with the carefully constructed tales found within A Mineral Love. Picking up where his The Green EP left off, A Mineral Love beautifully ties together its influences from the ghosts of music that surrounded him during his childhood from '90s jungle and hardcore dance tracks to late '70s and into early '80s American TV show themes. Elements of previous Bibio releases weave their way in from the heartbreakingly melancholy Petals to the Americana grassroots folk of Wren Tails, while his collab with Olivier St. Louis Why So Serious? and recent single Feeling is a prime time head-nodding funk with just the right amount of disco sure to get your mind and body moving. Fans of old are gonna find much to enjoy here whilst newcomers will easily become lost in its rich tapestry. A Mineral Love and a record you will too.

Ambivalence Avenue

Mindblowing Warp debut for Bibio, destined to sit in the canon as one of the loveliest records in the catalogue. A hushed crackle ushers in Ambivalence...& the lo-fi noise soon gives way to chiming guitars and the hazy hue of a lost 70s folk record. Gorgeous. Then the swift drop as Bibio stays in the 70s but with 'Jealous of Roses' lifts it up to the funk, where wah-wah guitar dust sounds like a blue-eyed Sly Stone.
