!!! - that’s still pronounced Chk Chk Chk, by the way - don’t mess with the formula too much on eighth LP Wallop. Wallop almost acts as an extension of 2017’s Shake The Shudder, a record that presented some of !!!’s most succinct and streamlined songwriting to date. Many of the tracks here are anchored by a punchy one-two of disco big-beats and juicy bass hooks (be they provided by electric bass or a synthesiser). Cuts such as ‘My Fault’ and ‘This Is The Door’ are pure and effortless club rushes. The band also dabble in other dancefloor styles towards the back-end of Wallop - there’s a two-step shuffle somewhere in ‘Domino’ while ‘Rhythm Of The Gravity’ has a bit of Bomb The Bass about it.
Shake The Shudder
Handling production duties once again to their longtime collaborator Patrick Ford, the group have crafted twelve tracks of funk infused indie-disco that tread a fine line between baggy acid house fun and NYC electro-clash electronica. Mixed by Phil Moffa, Joakim and Matt Wiggins and coming packed to the brim with guest spot singers inc. Lea Lea, Meah Pace, Nicole Fayu, Cameron Mesirow and Molly Schnick, Shake The Shudder is set to ignite the dancefloors and summer BBQs at which it'll be a staple.
!!! release their sixth studio album, As If, through Warp . As ever, !!! are tight with their grooves yet loose with their experimentation. Opening with off-kilter funk song ‘All U Writers’ (first released as a 12” single on Record Store Day), the album plays with taut rhythms, diva house vocals, and extended disco repetitions – often on the same song, in the case of ‘Freedom! ‘15’. Elsewhere are goofball rock-outs (‘Bam City’) and raw acid dance cuts (‘I Feel So Free (Citation Needed)’). It’s an album that manages to feel totally free, yet also totally focused.
