Pouncing off the back of 2019’s live explorations Memory Streams, experimental jazz innovators Portico Quartet land within arm’s reach of their previous LP, although they’ve veered off into distinctly minimal territory — more so than usual, anyway. We Welcome Tomorrow features three tracks of further contemporary jazz fusions with the group’s beloved electronic, hip-hop and contemporary classical stimulants, but the tone edges on the quiet and the ephemeral. ‘Mirage’, for instance, mulls over an arpeggiated organ phrase while romance strings and unearthly ambiences unfold like so many blooming flora.
