US innovators and scientists of indie rock obscurantism in three minutes or less Guided By Voices hit their stride with 1995’s Alien Lanes. Despite being their eighth release (of many), there’s no better place to begin with the world’s busiest indie rock outfit; ‘Game of Pricks’, ’A Good Flying Bird’ and ‘Pimple Zoo’ pair power pop immediacy with singer Robert Pollard’s elliptical storytelling, while the brief introduction ‘A Salty Salute’ beckons future superfans with an open-armed welcome: “c’mon c’mon the club is open”.
