String Noise, Black Truffle’s latest release of music from the late Alvin Lucier, is further testament to his singular artistic vision. These three pieces focus on Lucier’s 21st Century compositions for one or more violins, but all of them do something remarkable with the instrument and rooms around them. ‘Tapper’ finds a performer knocking their instrument with a bow as they move around a space, ‘Love Song’ sees two violins bound together by wire, the notes played on one instrument resonating within both, and ‘Halo’ creates beatific drones by the performer(s) walking around Lucier’s home. As was so often the case with Lucier’s work, the resulting music is at once experimentally daring and also hugely moving, a celebration of the potential and possibility of sound.
