Jack Cooper’s Modern Nature project follows up 2019’s How To Live LP with Annual, a mini-album that develops the project’s tender, slightly rootsy brand of sophisticated pop. The combination of thoughtful songcraft, vocal harmonies and a sonic aesthetic that draws equally from folk and jazzy balladry brings cuts like ‘Harvest’ and ‘Flourish’ into the orbit of Tindersticks. Fellow Bella Union acts Midlake, Peter Broderick and the Dirty Three can all be made out in Annual’s painterly tones too.
