Ben Bertrand is a clarinet player capable of creating whole worlds with his instrument. On his new LP Manes, Bertrand has collaborated with producer Christophe Albertijn to create a set of lengthy, spectral classical compositions. The influence of Steve Reich, Benjamin Britten and Colin Stetson can all be discerned across this record, while there is an eeriness to Manes which also invokes, obliquely, a sort of 50s B-movie vibe. Really interesting stuff.
