Protomartyr may have been the best of all of the bands to have emerged from the resurgence of noisy, doom-laden post-punk that went on throughout the 2010s. Ultimate Success Today, Protomartyr’s fifth LP, reminds us exactly why this is - as instrumentals brood and build, their beats a lumbering version of motorik, vocalist Joe Casey channels both inner and outer turmoil with a combination of Iggy Pop’s sinewy yelp and the gothic fire of mid-period Nick Cave.
