Hold on tight, there’s a new Merzbow record in town. Taped in June 2019 at Australia’s Open Frame festival, StereoAkuma is a set as blistering and visceral as anything else in the vaunted noise musician’s catalogue. Mind you, there are also moments of relative calm here, with Merzbow’s all-consuming drones occasionally punctuated by watery chords and passages of relative quiet. StereoAkuma also has a good cause behind it - all profits from the release will go to aiding wildlife recovery in Australia in the aftermath of the country’s devastating bushfires.
