On Rejoice we find two titans of African music uniting for a late-period hurrah. South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela and Nigerian drummer Tony Allen may have passed away in 2018 and 2020 respectively, but Rejoice will stand as a testament to their incredible talents for many years to come. The music here is an effortlessly cool concoction, mixing Allen’s blend of Afrobeat and Blue Note jazz with Masekela’s clear-toned trumpet style. At points we find vocals rise up from the grooves here to take centre-stage, but otherwise Rejoice is an album which rides in the pocket, slinking its way onwards through history. RIP.
